Cleaning Old Marble Memorial Stones

We often get calls about cleaning Marble Memorials.
The Method we use is what was recommended by,
the Monument Builders of North America, from a 2008 article.

Many commercial cleaners will do more harm than good. A stronger cleaner and water solution is NOT better.

Remember!
Lots and lots of water,
always start with a clean water rinse
and finish with a clean water rinse.

Use Soft-bristled plastic, nylon or natural bristle brushes only.

Cleaning Solution:
1 part white household ammonia and 4 parts water. Be sure to rinse the stones well with clean water in the beginning and at the end.
Start brushing at the bottom and work upwards.

_______________

As Marble ages, the inscriptions will become harder to read. Marble is affected by Acid Rain and Acid Rain is slowly dissolving the stone. We suggest replacing these memorials with ones made of granite. Granite is a very Hard Material and shows little or no affect from Acid Rain.
Constant cleaning marble will accelerate the erosion process.
Marble is a soft stone, unlike Granite. Granite is very hard.

Granite can be cleaned with the same solution, as well as other methods.
